Number plates must not be altered in any way and must not be covered in anything that makes them illegible – that includes dirt or mud.  You may not use any other number plates other than those registered for your vehicle, unless you apply for a vanity or cherished number plate from the DVLA.  All paperwork must be completed before you use your new number plates, otherwise you will be committing an offence.
