As each day goes by, I think I learn a little bit more about teaching English to kids.  Perhaps I should rephrase that:  As each day goes by, I think I learn a little bit more about how not to teach kids English.  Most of the lessons have already been planned out to help keep the curriculum standardized.  The private English academy that I currently work for strongly emphasizes making sure teachers understand fully how to teach english overseas to non-native speakers before allowing them to be a bit more liberal in lesson structure.  As the students I teach improve, it’s becoming easier to get through the pre-arranged lesson plan faster, leaving me with time at the end of the evenings for the kids to converse freely with me or ask any questions they may have.  I’m not quite sure when it all went so wrong, but about 10-mintues into a conversation about the lyrics in a popular rap song, I found myself wondering whether or not to answer a question politely asked by a 12-year-old girl regarding how to pluralize the word “ass.”   I think I will be sticking to the lesson plan from here on out.
