The Intelligent Dog As A Hero

The strongest illustration of a dog’s ability to think and to reason is when it is faced with a completely new situation for which it has no relevant memories to draw upon, and it has to determine the possible solutions to the problem, weigh the merits of one against another, and act ‘correctly’ and intelligently. There are many such stories recorded in the history of dogs, the most impressive being acts of heroism.
A Boston Terrier in Texas, for instance, as thrown form his owners’ car when it had a blow-out on the highway and the car rolled down an embankment. It then started to catch fire, with the dog’s owners still inside, unconscious. The dog raced up to the highway and barked furiously at every car that passed until a driver stopped. The dog led the stranger down the slope to the car and the couples were saved.
