When Would I Need a Tux?

Someone I know told them that instead of just renting a tux for an upcoming event I should buy one. However, I am trying to figure out whether or not this makes sense. How often would I really wear it? I am trying to figure out how likely it is that I will go to future events that require mens fancy dress. It seems most of my friends are getting married and having casual dress requirements. I don’t go to fund raisers and charity events, so what does that leave? I just don’t think that it would be a good investment for me right now.
